Workers in the Imo State civil service have staged a protest against an attack on their colleague, Unegbu Chimaobi, by one Precious Izuogu, son of the chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, while carrying out his duties.
The protesters, who were mostly information officers and their colleagues moved through the Local Government Commission office to the Head of Service’s office at the state secretariat in Owerri with placards carrying different inscriptions like: “Enough Is Enough, Civil Servants Are Not Slaves, We Demand Justice.”
The workers decried the frequent attacks on the civil servants by Precious Izuogu.
Speaking on their behalf, Mrs. Bibian Okere stated that the information officers of the ministry of information had come to show their grievance over the incident, pointing out that if allowed to continue, it meant the officers had become an endangered specie.
She urged the Head of Service to look into the matter and ensure that Chimaobi Unegbu gets justice.
In his response, the Head of Service, Barr. Raymond Ucheoma, commended the workers for the show of solidarity as an injury to one is an injury to all. He told of the steps taken to ameliorate the situation, stating that Unegbu was taken to hospital for treatment .
He reminded the officers of the importance of their office to the government and that having displayed this high level of solidarity, it would not be taken for granted.
He added that Governor Hope Uzodimma is a worker-friendly and he assured them of their safety as information officers are the ones that mirror governance.
