The late Matriarch Florence Akhaihiegbe Ihenyen was a remarkable woman whose life was characterised by dedication, compassion and unwavering faith. She was born to the family of late Pa Imoisili Ihenyen and late Madam Titi Teresa Ihenyen of Uhiele-Ekpoma in present day Esan-west local government area (now Edo State) on December 26,1942.
Fondly called “Sister” by family members and associates, Madam Florence spent her early years in Uhiele-Ekpoma. She grew up with a sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
She started her education-journey at St Mary Primary School Uhiele-Ekpoma and then proceeded to St Michael Modern College Irrua, Esan-Central local government area after which she proceeded to Sacred Heart College Obiaja for her TC II. After her TCII, she was employed by the then Midwest Education Board to teach at St Mary Primary School Iruekpen and later transferred to Usugbenu Primary School, Irrua.
From a young age, Madam Florence exhibited a nurturing and caring spirit, inspired by her younger sister, Mrs Josephine Asuelimen who had already ventured into a career in Nursing. Witnessing her sister’s dedication and the positive impact she made on people’s lives, Madam Florence decided to follow a similar path.
This inspiration fueled her passion and commitment to pursuing a career in Nursing. Her keen interest in Nursing was not only shaped by her younger sister’s influence but also by the iconic image of nurses in their white uniforms, symbolising care, compassion and healing. Madam Florence envisioned herself wearing the white uniform, representing hope and solace to those in need.
She obtained her midwifery certificate from St Camillus Hospital Uromi, Esan Northeast, Edo State. Wearing the white uniform became a reality to her as she embraced the role of midwifery wholeheartedly. Armed with her training as a midwife she worked at General Hospital Kwale, General Hospital Obiaruku and General Hospital Agbor respectively where she rose to the position of Midwifery Matron until her retirement. After her retirement, she worked with some private hospitals such as Mucas Hospital Lagos after which she furthered into her private business in Ekpoma through which she applied to the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria and she was granted license to sell patents and proprietary medicines. While doing her private medicine business, she became an in-house nurse to seminary students.
she also mentored and helped women get loans for their businesses through LAPO (Lift Above Poverty Organisation). She used her knowledge about finances to guide and assist aspiring small business owners, making it easier for them to get the financial support they needed. Thanks to her efforts, many small businesses in the community were able to grow and succeed, making a positive difference for everyone involved.
As the second child and first daughter of the family, during her holidays, she devoted her time to be with her mother, immersing herself in farming and trading to support her younger siblings. Through her dedication and hard work, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to family and community, setting an example of selflessness and responsibility that would resonate for generations.
Beyond her professional life, she was also a devoted Christian. Her faith was the cornerstone of her existence; guiding her decisions and actions. She was an active member of her church, participating in various ministries and devoting her time to helping those in need. Even in the face of adversity, her faith remained unwavering. There was an incident where she was robbed, dragged on the floor; her clothes soiled, yet her determination to rekindle her spirit in the church remained unshaken. She gathered herself, clad in her tarnished attire, she walked back to the place that gave her solace – the church. This event symbolised her unyielding trust in her faith, a testament to her resilience and the depth of her convictions. Through trials and tribulations, her unwavering faith was a guiding light, reinforcing her devotion and inspiring all who witnessed her incredible strength.
Throughout her life, Madam Florence demonstrated kindness, love, and selflessness, leaving an indelible mark in the life of everyone she encountered. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the love she shared.
Madam Florence passed away on August 29, 2023, leaving a void in the hearts of her family, friends and the community. However, her memory and the impact of her caring nature continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing her.
In memory of Madam Florence, let us strive to carry on her legacy of compassion, faith and love for one another, embodying the qualities that made her a truly remarkable and beloved individual.
Farewell Sister Florence, a beacon of love and compassion. Until we meet again.
