Emmanuel Idowu is a visual artist and illustrator who primarily works in painting and sculpture. His practice focuses on themes of nostalgia, childhood memories, and cultural heritage, often drawing from Yoruba traditions and personal experiences.

Idowu providing insight into his work, saying, “I create artworks that reflect memory, time, and human experiences. My paintings often explore childhood nostalgia through swings, gardens, and playful imagery, while my sculptures are made with sawdust and glue, giving them a unique textural quality.”

Speaking on his inspiration, Idowu explained that, it stems from his personal memories of growing up, his cultural roots in Yoruba traditions, and the desire to preserve and reinterpret stories that connect people. ‘Art became my way of documenting these experiences and expressing emotions that words sometimes cannot capture,’ he shared.

According to the artist, one of his proudest moments was winning the Absa L’Atelier Art Competition in 2023, which brought him international recognition and the opportunity to serve as the Absa Ambassador. As part of this role, he presented his solo exhibition, “Echoes of Innocence,” at Alliance Française de Lagos in collaboration with Absa L’Atelier.

In 2022, he also won the Next of Kin award and participated in the Dak’Art Biennale, both of which expanded his professional network and visibility. He credits these experiences with strengthening his career and opening doors to more opportunities.

Lucrativity

The art business can be rewarding, but it requires patience and a strategic approach. While it doesn’t always provide a consistent income, with dedication, relationship-building, and staying true to one’s vision, it can lead to both financial stability and personal fulfillment.

Challenges

A major challenge for Idowu has been sustaining resources for his practice while also supporting his family. He has learned to be resourceful with materials, consistent in his studio work, and open to residencies, grants, and mentorships that provide both exposure and support.

Advice

He advises aspiring artists to be consistent with their practice, be patient with their growth, and focus on building a strong personal voice. He also emphasizes the importance of networking, noting that mentorships, residencies, and collaborations are key to growth. Most importantly, he says, “let passion drive your work, not just money.”
