All government offices, including ministries and agencies, were completely shut down on Tuesday as workers in Kwara State stayed away from their places of work as directed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

At the Governor’s Office, which houses the offices of the secretary to the state government and the Head of Service, and Ministry of Justice, only a few workers reported for duty.

All public schools were also shut as both the teachers and students did not turn up for teaching and learning, respectively.

However, some commercial banks in Ilorin, the state capital, opened for business.

The state chairman of the NLC, Comrade Murtala Olayinka, expressed satisfaction with the civil servants’ level of compliance with the NLC’s directive.

“The level of compliance with the NLC’s directive to workers to commence a strike action today (Tuesday) was commendable. In our efforts to enforce the directive of the national secretariat of NLC, we had set up a picketing committee to go around and ensure that no worker report for duty. The committee did a good job from the report reaching us from the field and we are satisfied with the level of compliance by our members,” Comrade Olayinka stated.

LEADERSHIP reports that the indefinite nationwide strike action declared by the Organised Labour was in protest to the arrest and brutalisation of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, allegedly by Police operatives in Owerri, Imo State, last week.
