The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will commence a nationwide revalidation of the register of voters from April 13, as part of efforts to enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future elections.

In a public notice issued via its official X handle on Friday, the commission said the exercise is aimed at sanitising the voter database by identifying and removing ineligible entries.

INEC stated that the revalidation would target “null and ineligible voters,” including deceased persons, non-Nigerians, underage registrants, and cases of multiple registrations, in line with existing legal provisions.

The commission clarified that the exercise does not amount to a fresh voter registration. Rather, it is specifically designed for individuals who registered between 2011 and 2024.
According to INEC, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to revise and update the national voter register to ensure its accuracy, inclusiveness, and reliability.

“The exercise is part of the commission’s efforts to revise, update, clean and strengthen the integrity, accuracy, inclusivity, and credibility of the national register of voters ahead of future elections,” the notice stated.

The electoral body further urged eligible voters within the specified period to participate in the exercise, noting that a credible voter register remains critical to the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections in the country.
