Insecurity: Pastor Bolaji Idowu Defends Clergy

As calls intensified for religious leaders to take a stronger public stance on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre, Bolaji Idowu, has pushed back against critics, saying the clergy have consistently spoken out and prayed against violence in the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Idowu criticised those demanding fresh condemnations from the pulpit, insisting that ministers of the gospel have remained active voices against insecurity and should not be portrayed as silent.

The statement also listed several clerics it described as being outspoken on the state of the nation, including David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel (Living Faith Church), Yemi Davids of Global Impact Church, and Yemi Iren, among others.

According to the statement, Bishop Oyedepo has consistently spoken on insecurity through sermons and prophetic declarations. It quoted him as having “issued strong prophetic warnings and declarations against insecurities for years.

“He has questioned the boldness of kidnappers, called for midnight prayers to avoid chaos, pronounced judgment on pertrators, and warned of potential genocide if action is not taken.”

The statement further referenced comments attributed to Prophet Isa El-Buba, who has been vocal on security matters and has previously criticised armed groups, including Miyetti Allah, while also advocating for community-based security initiatives.

t added that the clergy represent a blend of spiritual intercession and civic engagement, describing them as “the country’s voice of reason” in the face of rising insecurity.

The remarks come amid renewed public debate over the role of religious leaders in national advocacy, particularly as incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and communal violence continued to heighten public concern across Nigeria.
