The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has called for stronger international partnerships, digital transformation and strategic investments to improve Hajj fund management and reduce the financial burden on pilgrims.

NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, made the call while participating in the 8th International Hajj Fund Forum (IHFF) 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The forum, hosted by Indonesia’s Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) at the Jakarta International Convention Centre, brought together policymakers, Islamic finance experts and institutional leaders to explore sustainable approaches to managing Hajj funds.

Speaking on a high-level panel alongside BPKH Executive Board Chief Fadlul Imansyah and other international delegates, Yusuf stressed the need for cooperation among relevant agencies and the adoption of digital systems to protect Hajj operations from global economic uncertainties.

He said effective Hajj fund management must go beyond meeting the immediate financial demands of annual pilgrimages to safeguarding resources and delivering long-term benefits for future generations.

“The future of Hajj administration depends on our collective ability to innovate. Managing Hajj funds efficiently is no longer just about financing the immediate next pilgrimage; it is about protecting wealth and ensuring sustainable benefits for future generations of pilgrims,” Yusuf said.

He added that NAHCON was seeking to strengthen Nigeria’s collaboration with international partners, particularly Indonesia, to promote transparency and financial sustainability in Hajj administration.

The NAHCON chairman also advocated investments in profitable infrastructure projects across the Hajj value chain, particularly hospitality and logistics.

According to him, such investments could help reduce accommodation costs for Nigerian pilgrims while generating sustainable returns for Hajj funds.

The forum’s central theme was “Sustainable Hajj Fund Management Through Strategic Synergy and Digital Transformation”, with discussions focusing on rising operational costs, global economic pressures and the need to preserve the long-term value of funds managed for pilgrims.

Indonesian Minister of Hajj and Umrah, K.H. Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, and Vice-Minister of Finance, Juda Agung, were among the dignitaries who delivered introductory addresses at the event.

NAHCON said Nigeria’s participation reflected its commitment to developing technology-driven financial management systems and building strategic partnerships with other Muslim-majority countries.

The commission maintained that closer international cooperation, digital innovation and investments in the Hajj service sector could strengthen financial accountability while improving services for Nigerian pilgrims.

The forum comes amid continuing efforts by Hajj authorities to manage rising pilgrimage costs and establish sustainable funding arrangements that can serve both current and future pilgrims.
