A former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has called for sustained intervention by the federal government to address the lingering security challenges confronting the state.
Suswam made the call while speaking on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia at the 6th edition of the Accolade Yellow Ball Awards 2026 in Abuja, where the governor was awarded ‘Best Performing Governor in Infrastructural Development.’
He acknowledged that insecurity, particularly clashes between herders and farmers and criminal activities in parts of the state, remains a major concern. Despite the challenges, the Benue State Government has continued to pursue infrastructure development and governance reforms to improve residents’ lives.
“I think the award accurately represents what the governor of Benue State. He is laying a solid foundation for future generations through infrastructural development despite the many challenges facing the state and the country generally,” Suswam said.
The former governor said Alia has continued to demonstrate determination and sincerity in governance while confronting the state’s security challenges.
“He has continued to work with determination and sincerity.
For people outside the state to recognise his efforts and honour him with this award is highly commendable,” he added.
Suswam stressed that stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and the state would be critical to restoring peace and stability in affected communities.
He expressed optimism that with sustained federal support and coordinated security efforts, the security situation in Benue would improve significantly.
The former governor urged residents to continue supporting government initiatives aimed at promoting peace, unity, and development across the state.
Also speaking at the event, Managing Director and CEO of Accolade Dynamics Ltd, Doofan Chizaram-Tor, described the awards as a platform dedicated to recognising excellence and celebrating individuals and organisations that have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and transformational leadership across Nigeria and Africa.
“Tonight is about recognising excellence across different spheres, including entrepreneurship, technology, philanthropy, and humanitarian service. We are here to honour individuals who were nominated and voted for by the public through Accolade Dynamics Ltd.
“This is the sixth edition of the Accolade Yellow Ball & Awards, and we are delighted by the massive support and attendance. Over the years, the platform has distinguished itself as more than just an awards ceremony.
“It has become a platform that honours visionaries and trailblazers shaping the future of the continent,” she said.
She further explained that this year’s selection process involved public participation through a voting system.
“This year, we didn’t only recognise politicians. We honoured entrepreneurs, companies, foundations, and individuals making a real impact in society.
“The public voting system allowed Nigerians to decide who they believed deserved the awards. It was not just an Accolade decision; it was a people-driven process that ensured Nigerians’ voices were heard.
“We have people from grassroots communities who built successful companies from nothing, and individuals who rose through the ranks in politics and leadership. Regardless of where you come from, consistent hard work and dedication will always be recognised,” she added.
On her part, the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said the recognition demonstrated that the ministry was on the right path in advancing women’s empowerment and social development.
“A few days ago, women across Nigeria gathered under the ‘Power of 10 Million’ initiative to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for women, children, families, and vulnerable groups. Women from different political parties, generations, and regions came together to speak with one voice in support of the President’s commitment to women’s development,” she said.
The minister added that the Federal Government was taking steps to strengthen Nigeria’s social welfare system by operationalising the Social Work Council Act.
“Mr President has prioritised the implementation of the Social Work Council Act, and very soon, Nigerians will witness the emergence of a stronger social work council and a more effective social welfare workforce in the country,” she stated.
Also in attendance at the event was the Governor of the State, represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism.
