FIFA 2026 World Cup Draw Format Unveiled

The Iran Football Federation has reportedly threatened to withdraw from the FIFA World Cup 2026, casting a shadow over the tournament as political tensions intensify in West Asia.

Iran, having already secured its qualification for the event co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, faces mounting pressure due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel.

This development raises significant concerns, particularly as Iran is scheduled to play all three of its group-stage matches on American soil. Fixtures include encounters against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15th and 21st respectively, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26th. The potential withdrawal jeopardises these crucial games.

Mehdi Taj, President of the Iran Football Federation, addressed the nation on Iranian public television, stating that the recent attack by the United States on an Iranian leader made it “difficult to think about looking ahead to the FIFA World Cup.” He confirmed that while serious concerns exist, the ultimate decision on participation rests with the country’s senior sports officials.

Domestically, the football league has been suspended indefinitely, impacting several foreign players. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adán, Spanish-Moroccan forward Munir, and ex-Real Valladolid player Iván Sánchez are among those affected. Adán has reportedly returned to Madrid, while Munir and Sánchez are attempting to leave Iran by road.

Adding to the tournament’s challenges, security concerns have also emerged in Mexico. Guadalajara recently experienced violent unrest following a military operation that resulted in the death of cartel leader “El Mencho.” The incident led to vehicle arsons, supermarket vandalism, and a temporary suspension of public transport, further complicating FIFA’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
