Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed strong confidence that Nigeria will secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,following a qualifying campaign he described as a rescue mission.
After a poor start that forced the team into a tense playoff route, the three-time African champions are set to face Gabon in a semi-final clash in Rabat, Morocco, on November 13.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” the Fulham star told CNN, reflecting on the team’s narrow escape from an early elimination.
Despite the shaky path, Iwobi believes the team’s quality is undeniable.
“We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world,” he said, pointing to the individual brilliance within the squad.
Highlighting the caliber of his teammates, Iwobi noted, “We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen). It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
The playoff in Morocco represents a final hurdle for the Super Eagles to book their ticket to the mundial and avoid the stunning disappointment of missing a second consecutive World Cup.
