Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the release of over N3.2 billion for agricultural interventions and youth empowerment.

The commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa, revealed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council’s meeting.

He explained that out of the total sum, N1.575 billion was approved to cover 30% of the cost for purchasing 35,000 water pumps. These will be distributed to farmers across the state’s 27 local government areas.

The commissioner stated that the petrol-powered water pumps will enhance irrigation activities and build the capacity of the youth to embrace farming as a business.

Hon. Sagir further revealed that N1.649 billion was also approved to procure 52 units of rice parboiling stoves and 13 solar-powered dryers for distribution to the youth as an empowerment initiative.

He added that the items, to be distributed including rice processors, will help enhance the agricultural value chain, create jobs, and alleviate poverty.

“The Executive Council also approved N240.6 million for the procurement of office facilities for the World Bank-supported project, Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria,” he said.

“All these approvals and the related programs are part of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda and agricultural mechanization policy,” Sagir said.
