The Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan 2027 has described former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most qualified and experienced leader to address Nigeria’s current challenges, confirming efforts to position him for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at an international press conference in Abuja on Sunday, the coalition’s president, Tom Ohikere, said the group is mobilising support across Nigeria and the diaspora to facilitate Jonathan’s return to national leadership.

Ohikere said the coalition serves as a central coordinating platform, bringing together various support groups with a shared goal of restoring stability, rebuilding economic confidence, and promoting responsible governance.

He noted that Nigeria is grappling with serious economic and security challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and currency instability, which have deepened hardship and eroded public confidence in government.

According to him, the situation requires experienced leadership with a solid understanding of governance, adding that Jonathan’s record across different levels of public service places him in a strong position to lead the country again.

“Jonathan remains one of the few Nigerians with extensive governance experience and a proven track record of national leadership,” Ohikere said.

The coalition also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and upholding the rule of law, stressing that rebuilding public trust in governance is a top priority.

It emphasised the need for inclusive governance that reflects Nigeria’s diversity, fosters national unity, and reduces political tension across regions.

Highlighting Jonathan’s time in office, the group said his administration demonstrated a commitment to democratic values, institutional stability, and economic reforms, adding that the outcomes of the 2014 National Conference remain relevant to ongoing discussions on national restructuring.

The coalition further criticised remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning Jonathan’s experience, describing them as inaccurate and inconsistent with his record in public service.

Ohikere argued that Jonathan’s progression through key leadership roles—from deputy governor to governor, vice president, and ultimately president—demonstrates broad and tested experience in governance.

He added that Jonathan’s peaceful transfer of power in 2015 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a testament to his respect for constitutional order.

The coalition said it has commenced consultations with stakeholders and political groups nationwide, with plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation and advocacy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It urged Nigerians to reflect on past and present leadership experiences and make informed choices about the country’s future.

“Support for Goodluck Jonathan represents a step towards restoring confidence, stability, and direction in Nigeria,” Ohikere said.
