Some suspected illegal miners have shot dead an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during an operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities in Korokpa Village, a suburb of Minna, the Niger State capital.
The incident occurred while operatives of the NSCDC Mining Marshal were on a routine patrol following intelligence that illegal mining was being carried out at the site, including at night.
According to reports, the patrol team encountered armed suspects at the location and requested reinforcement after discovering that the illegal miners were carrying firearms.
During the reinforcement operation, one of the NSCDC officers was shot in the head by the assailants.
Confirming the incident, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Niger State, Abubakar Muti, said the Mining Marshal team came under attack while carrying out a lawful enforcement operation.
“Operatives of the NSCDC Mining Marshal were on a routine operational patrol at an illegal mining site located in Korokpa Village when they came under attack by suspected illegal miners and their collaborators,” Muti said.
He explained that the suspects launched a coordinated and unprovoked attack on the patrol team upon sighting the officers in an apparent attempt to resist arrest and frustrate the enforcement exercise.
“The operatives promptly requested reinforcement to contain the situation and restore order.
“During the reinforcement operation, one of the responding officers was fatally shot in the head by the assailants. The injured officer was immediately evacuated from the scene and rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel to save his life, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” he added.
The NSCDC has yet to disclose whether any of the suspects were arrested, while further details of the incident are expected.
