The Kano State House of Assembly has approved proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution that would allow states to establish their own police forces.
The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, confirmed the approval to journalists shortly after plenary on Tuesday, saying, “We have approved the constitutional review for the establishment of state police at plenary today.”
“Kano is late on the approval because 24 states have already approved it, but we have deliberated and approved the proposed constitutional review”.
The approval followed consideration of constitutional amendments proposed by the National Assembly that seek to grant state governments the legal authority to establish and operate their own police forces.
