Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a car crash in Spain, according to local media reports.
The 28-year-old Portuguese international was said to have been involved in a fatal accident near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, early on Thursday morning.
Spanish news agency EFE reported that the crash occurred on the Rías Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria.
Jota’s younger brother, André Jota, 26, was also killed in the crash.
According to El Mundo, the incident reportedly occurred at around 12:40 a.m. local time, when the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire while heading toward Benavente.
The tragic news comes just 10 days after Jota celebrated his wedding, having recently shared photos from the ceremony on social media.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020 in a deal worth over £40 million.
He quickly became a key player for the club, known for his versatility and goal-scoring prowess.
His brother André was a professional footballer who played for Penafiel, a Portugal’s second division club.
At the time of filing this report, Liverpool Football Club and Portuguese authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
