The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has announced the reopening of the Third Mainland Bridge today, December 21, 2023.

LEADERSHIP reports that the bridge had been partially closed for a month for essential maintenance work.

The announcement, which was made around 6 pm on Thursday, brought relief and excitement to Lagosians who rely heavily on the bridge for daily commutes.

“We are pleased to announce that parts of the Third Mainland Bridge which were closed last month will reopen today,” stated Osiyemi, acknowledging the inconveniences caused by the closure.

“Following essential maintenance, the entire bridge is now fully accessible to the public, ensuring smoother connectivity and safe commuting.”

While some sections were closed for repairs, the full closure of the bridge significantly impacted traffic flow in Lagos, forcing millions to adjust their routines and find alternative routes.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their “patience during the temporary closure,” recognizing the sacrifices made during the maintenance period.

The reopening reaffirms the government’s dedication to maintaining public safety and critical infrastructure. Osiyemi emphasized the significance of the bridge, saying, “The Third Mainland Bridge remains a vital artery connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, and its smooth operation is crucial for economic activity and the well-being of millions.”

Before the full closure, the Federal Ministry of Works had announced repairs would be undertaken on two ramps, linking Oworoshoki to Adekunle and Lagos Island (Adeniji Adele) to Adekunle. Motorists were advised to follow diversions and utilize alternative routes during the maintenance period.

With the Third Mainland Bridge now fully operational, traffic is expected to gradually return to normal in Lagos. Lagosians expressed jubilation at the news, with many taking to social media to share their relief and anticipation for a smoother commute.
