Justice For The Fallen Air Force Officers And Their Families

Fallen Air Force Officers

By Hon, Suleiman Talba

The old adage that what is good for the goose is good for the gander speaks to the most elementary principle of justice: fairness, equity and consistency in the application of state power.

A few weeks ago, the nation was thrown into mourning following the tragic death of 37 miners in Niger State. Preliminary reports attributed the incident to negligence, lack of proper supervision and systemic institutional failures. In a swift and commendable response, the Federal Government constituted a high-level investigative panel to unravel the circumstances surrounding the disaster and to recommend sanctions for those found culpable.

That action was right. It was just. It demonstrated that government values the life of every Nigerian and that negligence, no matter where it occurs, must have consequences.

However, that same sense of justice now demands to be applied elsewhere.

Just recently, the nation suffered another grievous loss — the death of 32 officers, crew members and family members of the Nigerian Air Force in a tragic incident. These were gallant men and women in service to the nation, and innocent family members whose lives were cut short in the most painful circumstances.

If the death of 37 miners — private citizens engaged in economic activity — could justifiably attract a high-powered Federal Government investigative panel, then surely the death of 32 military personnel and their families in active service deserves no less. In fact, it deserves even more.

The questions begging for answers are many: What led to this tragedy? Was there negligence? Was there a failure of maintenance, supervision, or institutional oversight? Could this have been prevented? These are not questions to be swept under the carpet of “military routine” or closed-door internal inquiries.

The Nigerian Armed Forces is one of our most respected institutions. Its credibility rests not only on its fighting power, but on its transparency and accountability to the Nigerian people, especially when lives are lost.

To set up a public, high-level independent investigative panel for the Air Force incident, just as was done for the Niger miners, will serve three critical purposes:

  1. To Honour Dead: The fallen officers and their families deserve more than condolences and burial ceremonies. They deserve the truth.
  2. To Protect the Living: A transparent investigation will identify systemic gaps and prevent a recurrence. The lives of other serving personnel may depend on it.
  3. To Strengthen Public Trust: Selective justice breeds suspicion. Uniform justice builds national confidence. Nigerians must see that every life — whether miner or military officer — matters equally to the state.

We therefore call on the President and Commander-in-Chief, the Honourable Minister of Defence, and the Chief of the Air Staff to, as a matter of urgent national importance, constitute an independent, high-level investigative panel to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of these 32 Nigerians.

Let the panel be empowered to invite all relevant parties, audit all necessary records, and recommend firm sanctions where negligence is established.

What is good for the goose is indeed good for the gander. If we could do it for 37 miners in Niger, we must do it for 32 fallen heroes and their families. Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done — uniformly and without fear or favour.

May the souls of all the departed rest in perfect peace.
