The Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged shooting outside the secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu, which reportedly left a man injured and damaged five parked vehicles.
The incident occurred on Saturday when unidentified armed hoodlums allegedly opened fire in front of the party’s secretariat.
The victim, who was reportedly repairing a vehicle parked on the road when the incident occurred, sustained a gunshot injury and was rushed to a hospital by police operatives.
He is currently receiving treatment and said to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough investigation and identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The police said operatives responded promptly to the distress call, moved to the scene and restored normalcy.
In a separate incident on the same day, joint police and military operatives dispersed suspected NDC members who gathered in a disorderly manner at the entrance of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. following a disagreement over access to the airport, where the party members had reportedly gathered to receive their governorship candidate.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicated that airport authorities had restricted the party members from entering the facility in large numbers.
The restriction reportedly triggered a misunderstanding among the party members, which escalated into a fight and prompted the intervention of joint security operatives.
Reacting to the developments, Giwa urged political parties and their supporters to shun violence and conduct their activities in accordance with the law and existing peace accords.
He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties in the state.
The commissioner urged political parties to notify the police of their planned activities to enable the command to make adequate security arrangements and prevent incidents capable of disrupting public order.
The police said the investigation into the alleged shooting was ongoing.
