Kachia Local Government area of Kaduna State has condemned the spread of misleading information surrounding the recent attack in Ariko community, Awon Ward, stressing the need for accurate reporting and closer collaboration between community leaders and security agencies.
LEADERSHIP reports that bandits, on Easter Sunday, attacked Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing five persons and abducting others.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Office of the Chairman of Kachia Local Government Area, Manzo Daniel Maigari, the council said that the attack occurred on Sunday, April 5, 2026, during a church service.
The statement added that the attackers fled following the arrival of security operatives, noting that military personnel responded within 25 minutes and successfully rescued 31 persons, mostly elderly residents and children, who were safely returned to the community.
“On Easter Monday, seven additional victims from outside Ariko were rescued and taken to Katari for medical attention,” it stated.
The statement clarified discrepancies in casualty figures, noting that while the Kuturmi Development Association (KUDA) and the councilor of the Kachia Legislative Council, Mark Bawa, had reported eight deaths, verified records confirm that five persons were killed.
According to the statement, a high-level delegation, led by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and senior security officials including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations) and the Commissioner of Police, visited Ariko on 8th April.
“During the visit, the team encountered hostility from some youths who alleged delayed military response, though observations suggested attempts to influence public perception,” it stated.
It also challenged social media claims by Reuben Buhari, who alleged threats during a telephone conversation with him.
“The conversation was conducted in good faith and ended abruptly after insults from Mr. Buhari. We call on him to release the full, unedited recording to clarify the facts,” it said.
Maigari’s office reiterated that misinformation and unverified statements undermine coordinated security efforts and endanger lives.
“Leaders, particularly those outside affected communities, should avoid inflammatory remarks and support ongoing peacebuilding efforts,” the statement said.
The council assured the public of its commitment to working with security agencies, promoting transparency, and mobilizing community support to restore peace in Ariko and surrounding areas.
