Kaduna Fire Service Warns Against Storing, Selling Fuel At Home

The Kaduna State Fire Service has cautioned residents and ‘black marketers’ against selling and storing fuel in or around residential houses in the state.

The Controller of the Service, Usman Sadiq made the call on Friday in a statement in Kaduna, where he counselled, that in view of the scarcity of the product, designated storage facilities approved by relevant authorities should be utilised while purchasing fuel.

 

Sadiq warned that fuel, including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel, are highly flammable and possess significant fire hazard, therefore warning that storing them at home or workplaces can have devastating consequences.

He further said that toxic fumes, fuel vapours are dangerous as they can cause respiratory problems, dizziness, and even death if and when inhaled.

 

“The unsafe storage of fuel, particularly in drums and jerry cans at home, significantly increases the likelihood of accidents, endangering both individuals and communities.

 

“Among the hazard to be worried of is explosion risk. Fuel vapours can build up in enclosed spaces, creating a high risk of explosion if ignited,” Sadiq stressed.

 

The Controller also appealed to the Kaduna State Government and other relevant agencies to take immediate action to address the fuel scarcity situation and ensure proper storage practices are followed throughout the supply chain.

 

The agency strongly encouraged those involved in illicit fuel reselling – the black marketers to seek safer and lawful means of income generation.

He also reiterated, that residents should avoid storing fuel in unsafe locations to mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks in their communities.
