Kane Equals Pelé’s World Cup Goals Record

Harry Kane drew level with Brazilian great Pelé on the FIFA World Cup all-time scoring chart after netting twice in England’s 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo in the Round of 32.

The England captain’s brace took his World Cup tally to 12 goals, equalling Pelé’s total and further cementing his place among the tournament’s greatest goalscorers.

Kane’s double also saw him move level with Sir Geoff Hurst on four World Cup knockout-stage goals for England. Only Gary Lineker, with six, has scored more for the Three Lions in the knockout rounds of the competition.

England came from behind to secure the victory after DR Congo had taken an early lead through Brian Cipenga, who beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at his near post.

Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to create clear openings for much of the contest before Kane inspired the turnaround with two goals, including a spectacular winner.

The victory booked England’s place in the Round of 16, where they will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The result also marked England’s first come-from-behind victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match since the 1966 final.
