The Kano State Government has approved the construction of 50 low-cost housing units across 36 local government areas.
According to the government, the construction of the housing units is part of its efforts to ensure that rural dwellers have decent housing.
The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, disclosed this on Sunday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the 33rd State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the Government House in Kano.
Waiya said the housing initiative aims to provide affordable accommodation for low-income earners and reduce the rural-urban housing gap in the state.
He emphasised that the decision aligned with the administration’s commitment to improving living conditions and ensuring social equity across all communities.
The commissioner also announced that the council approved a total of N19,019,114,578.50 for the execution of key projects across various sectors, including education, health, water resources, infrastructure, power, and renewable energy.
In the education sector, N4.9 billion was approved for projects under the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, including the renovation of Government Technical College, Ungogo; settlement of debts owed to boarding school suppliers; and accreditation exercises at Kano State Polytechnic.
For the health sector, N274 million was approved for the renovation of Tiga General Hospital and the Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital within the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu.
Similarly, N3.3 billion was allocated to the Ministry of Water Resources for projects aimed at improving water supply and energy management. At the same time, N9.8 billion was earmarked for roads, flood control, and other infrastructure projects across the state.
The council also approved N979 million for renewable energy initiatives, including solar power installations at the African Hall in Government House.
Waiya further disclosed that Governor Yusuf recently received seven national and international awards in recognition of his leadership and contributions to governance, education, sports, and climate action.
He also reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to promote inclusive development, transparency, and improved welfare for all citizens of the State.
