Kano Government Approves N19bn For Key Projects

The Kano State Executive Council (SEC) has approved a total of N19,019,114,578.50 for the execution of projects across key sectors of the state’s economy, including education, health, water resources, power, infrastructure, and housing.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, following the 33rd Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House in Kano on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

According to the statement, the meeting “deliberated on critical issues of governance and development affecting the state” and after thorough consideration, “approved N19,019,114,578.50 for the execution of projects across various sectors of the state economy.”

Waiya said the education sector received the largest share of the allocation, with ₦4.93 billion approved for projects under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry for Higher Education. These include the “settlement of debts owed to boarding school feeding suppliers amounting to N1.49 billion,” and “N2.54 billion for the renovation of Government Technical College, Ungogo (Phase II).”

Other approvals in the sector include N308.9 million for outstanding liabilities due to the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), N139 million for instructional materials produced by the Kano Printing Press, N400 million for procurement of office furniture and fittings at Northwest University, and N270.9 million for completion and furnishing of the E-Library at Kano State College of Education and Preliminary Studies.

In the health sector, the council approved N274 million for renovation and upgrade of major health facilities, including N109 million for renovation and additional works at Tiga General Hospital, and N164 million for the general renovation of Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital at Kofar Kudu.

Waiya said the Ministry of Water Resources also received approval for projects amounting to N3.33 billion aimed at improving water supply and energy management. Of this, N915 million was set aside for the construction of a new water treatment plant at Taliwaiwai in Rano Local Government Area, N1.75 billion for payment of fuel debts for water treatment plants, and N670 million to settle electricity bills owed to KEDCO.

For works and infrastructure, the council approved N9.85 billion for road construction, flood control, and renovation projects across the state. Among the major approvals are N2.63 billion for construction of Dambatta–Gwarabjawa Road, N2.47 billion for installation of four-way intersection traffic lights across major roads, and N388 million for flood control at Baban Gwari Roundabout along Katsina Road.

Other projects include N339 million for solar-powered streetlights at Kwankwasiyya City, N277 million for renovation of Audu Bako Secretariat (Phase II), N810 million for road studs within Kano metropolis, and N135 million for solar streetlights at Ado Bayero Square and Sabon Gari.

The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy was also allocated N979 million for solar power installations, including N840 million for a 150KW solar backup system at Africa House, Government House.

Under the Office of the Deputy Governor, N149 million was approved for the 2026 Hajj operations budget of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, while the Office of the Secretary to the State Government got M126 million for the procurement of three Toyota Hilux vehicles. In the Ministry of Mineral Resources, N586.5 million was approved for the construction of weighbridges at Doguwa and five major entry points into Kano State.

On policy decisions, Waiya said the council approved the construction of 50 low-cost houses across the 36 local government areas outside the metropolis “to provide affordable housing for low-income earners.” It also endorsed the “acquisition of majority shares in KEDCO aimed at achieving energy sufficiency, promoting economic inclusion, and creating a business-friendly environment that supports sustainable industrial growth in Kano and the entire region.”

The meeting also adopted the Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.

The statement further noted that Governor Yusuf recently received seven national and international awards for his leadership and service to humanity.
