The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA), has condemned recent remarks credited to former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The group described Kwankwaso’s portrayal of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a “traitor” as an unfounded allegation, warning that such comments undermine democratic values and raise concerns about the former governor’s commitment to the collective interest of the people of Kano State.

In a statement issued yesterday, KPRA Coordinator, Isyaku Lawal Tofa, described the comments as misleading, inflammatory, and harmful to the political climate of Kano State.

KPRA called on Kwankwaso and other political actors to engage in constructive dialogue, present policy alternatives transparently, and avoid what it termed “insult-laden rhetoric.”

He said: “Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s portrait of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a traitor is an unfounded allegation that raises serious questions about Kwankwaso’s commitment to serving in the best interests of the people of Kano.

“It is necessary to highlight that Governor Yusuf was elected by the general populace through a democratic process and represents the voice and will of the people of Kano State. Such a statement from a figure like Kwankwaso not only undermines the democratic process but also sows seeds of discord within the community.

“Kwankwaso’s assertions are steeped in personal attacks that detract from the pressing issues facing our state. The politics of personal animosity do not serve the interests of our citizens, who expect their leaders to focus on governance, development, and the betterment of society.

“Instead of throwing around terms like ‘traitor,’ Kwankwaso should be urged to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at addressing the real challenges confronting the people of Kano, such as poverty, youth unemployment, and access to education.

“In tandem with his derogatory remarks about Governor Yusuf, Kwankwaso’s suggestion to designate January 23rd as ‘International Naivety Day’is equally baffling.”

KPRA argued that while satire has a place in politics, framing such an idea in the context of local governance trivialises serious governance issues and risks deepening political divisions rather than fostering unity.

The group urged Kwankwaso and other political leaders to embrace constructive dialogue, present policy alternatives transparently, and refrain from what it termed “insult-laden rhetoric.”

He added, “Kwankwaso’s premise appears to be rooted in personal grievance rather than genuine concern for the populace’s welfare. Rather than uniting our people, a so-called ‘International Naivety Day’ could exacerbate divisions and foster contempt between different political factions, undermining unity and cooperation essential for effective governance.

“In a time when the community needs solidarity, creating symbols that insult and ridicule contributes nothing to the peace and development of our state. Political engagement should center around issues that touch the lives of people.

“The KPRA encourages alternative approaches from former leaders, including Kwankwaso, advocating that they put forth policies, programs, and reforms that will bring lasting improvements to public welfare and not engage in personal attacks.

“We, the Kano People’s Rights Alliance, would like to reiterate our call for a more responsible approach to political discourse in Kano State. The people of Kano deserve leaders who reflect integrity, respect, and a commitment to their welfare. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s recent comments regarding Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf exemplify the need for a reconsideration of how we engage in political discussions.”

The alliance also criticised Kwankwaso’s proposal to mark January 23 as “International Naivety Day,”describing it as derogatory and dismissive of the dignity of political office and the people of Kano State.

The alliance urged political actors to focus on actionable policies capable of uplifting communities and improving the quality of life of Kano residents, stressing that unity and cooperation remain essential for the state’s peace and development.
