The Kano State Government has inaugurated a storm water drainage project in Ladanai Quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area, to address recurrent flooding challenges in the community.
The project was commissioned on Tuesday by the commissioner for environment and climate change, Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, who noted that it reflects Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of residents.
Muhammad-Hashim explained that the initiative was a direct response to community requests and demonstrates the government’s inclusive approach to development. “This community has long faced flood-related issues, especially during the rainy season, impacting residents socially and economically,” he said.
He added that similar drainage projects have been implemented across the local government, including Hotoro Arewa, as part of broader efforts to manage urban flooding. The state government is also integrating effective drainage systems into ongoing road construction, renewal, and rehabilitation projects to create a functional drainage master plan.
The commissioner expressed confidence that these initiatives would significantly reduce flooding, allowing residents to enjoy a safer rainy season. He, however, urged the community to take ownership of the infrastructure by preventing misuse, such as dumping waste in the drains or allowing heavy vehicles to damage the structures. Residents were also advised to report any issues promptly to the ministry to ensure long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, the Nasarawa local government chairman, Yusuf Ogan-Boye, represented by Hotoro North Councillor Ibrahim Muhammad-Musa, praised the state government for the intervention, noting that flooding had previously hindered children’s school attendance.
A representative of the Ladanai community, Jamilu Kabiru, also lauded the government and called for the relocation of companies operating in the area to prevent damage to the newly installed drainage infrastructure.
