The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of efforts to accelerate reforms and improve coordination in the state’s education sector.

Governor Abba Yusuf, announced the restructuring, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.

Under the new arrangement, the consolidated ministry will operate as the Ministry of Education, with a newly created Directorate of Higher Education to oversee tertiary institutions and related activities across the state.

The directorate, to be headed by a Permanent Secretary, will be supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision and management of higher education institutions.

The statement noted that all agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the Scholarship Board, will be reintegrated into the Ministry of Education. State-owned universities and other higher institutions will now fall under the supervision of the new directorate.

The restructuring, the government said, is part of broader education sector reforms aimed at eliminating duplication of responsibilities, strengthening policy coordination, and enhancing service delivery across all levels of education.

Governor Yusuf said the move would also reduce the cost of governance while boosting efficiency, accountability, and overall quality in education administration.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing comprehensive reforms to revitalise the sector and secure a better future for the state’s youth.

To ensure a smooth transition, the governor directed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service to immediately commence the realignment of the affected ministries and their departments.
