The Kano State Police Command has dismantled a drug syndicate in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, recovering 879 parcels of suspected Cannabis Sativa and arresting a suspect.
The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Kano.
He said the suspect, Umaru, popularly known as “Jalo” of Yan Shado village, was arrested on May 13, 2026, at about 6pm while allegedly offloading 18 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa into his residence.
According to him, operatives of the Dawakin Tofa Police Division carried out the operation based on credible intelligence.
“A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of 18 sacks containing 879 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa,” the statement said.
Kiyawa said the operation followed directives by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, to operational commanders to intensify intelligence-led policing and community collaboration in tackling crime.
He added that the strategy aligns with the Inspector-General of Police’s intelligence-led policing framework aimed at strengthening proactive crime prevention.
The suspect is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to identify suppliers, distributors, and other members of the drug network. He is expected to be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
The Command reiterated its commitment to tackling drug trafficking and abuse, noting that illicit drugs remain a major driver of violent crime, thuggery, and other social vices in the state.
In a related development, the police also intercepted a stolen vehicle at the Takai border following a distress call from Kaduna State.
Kiyawa said the Command received information on May 12, 2026, about a silver Pontiac Vibe with registration number KMC 928 LK, allegedly stolen in Kaduna and tracked toward Kano.
He said operatives at Takai Division immediately mounted a roadblock along the highway, leading to the interception of the vehicle.
A suspect, Christian Ikwumesi, 38, from Benin, Edo State, was arrested while driving the vehicle.
Preliminary investigation confirmed the vehicle was stolen from Kaduna State, and the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Kiyawa added that the recovered vehicle had been returned to its rightful owner, who commended the police for their swift response.
