In a historic moment for Nigerian athletics, 21-year-old Kanyinsola Ajayi made his debut in the men’s 100m final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, bringing an end to an 18-year wait for the country in the prestigious event.
Ajayi delivered a commendable performance, crossing the finish line in sixth place with a time of 10.00 seconds. Although he just missed out on a medal, his achievement is a significant milestone for Nigeria, especially as it coincided with his 21st birthday, marking a new chapter in the nation’s sprinting history.
The gold medal was claimed by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, with compatriot Kishane Thompson taking silver, while the bronze went to Olympic champion Noah Lyles of the United States.
Earlier on Sunday morning, Ajayi had showcased his potential by clocking an impressive 9.93 seconds in the semifinal, securing his place in the final behind the reigning Olympic champion, Noah Lyles. With this performance, he became the first Nigerian man since Olusoji Fasuba in 2007 to reach the final of the men’s 100m at the World Championships.
In a show of Nigeria’s ongoing athletic prowess, world record holder Tobi Amusan made waves on Saturday by winning heat 6 of the women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 12.53 seconds. She finished ahead of Bahamian athlete Devynne Charlton, who posted a time of 12.69 seconds. Amusan is set to compete again in the semifinals on Monday as she aims for another world title.
