A total of N80 million in donations has been raised for veterans and families of fallen soldiers at the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations in Kebbi State.

At the event, Governor Nasir Idris described the programme as a priority for his administration, underscoring the importance of honouring those who made sacrifices for national peace and unity.

“Last year, we launched this programme, and it is very dear to us. All of us here are beneficiaries of the sacrifices and commitment of our fallen heroes,” he stated. “I am personally a beneficiary of their sacrifices. Without them, we would not be here today,” the governor said.

Idris reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting veterans, citing initiatives such as land allocation, hajj seats and welfare improvements for families of the fallen.

“We have taken note of the land you requested. On hajj seats, you will be treated like any other group. On the welfare of the families of our fallen heroes, we are doing our best,” he said.

The governor personally contributed N10 million to the cause, in addition to the N50 million donation from the state government.

The acting chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Kebbi, Alhaji Ahmed Shehu, emphasised that the Remembrance Day honoured not only fallen heroes but also recognised the efforts of soldiers currently on active duty.

“The legion is committed to ensuring that fallen heroes are remembered and recognised for their sacrifices,” he said, adding that the 2025 N50 million donation was effectively utilised, benefiting widows and participants.

Other major contributors included members of the State Executive Council (N5 million), the secretary to the state government (N500,000), the three emirates of Yauri, Argungu, and Zuru (N1.5 million) and various organisations such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (N500,000) and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (N10.5 million).
