The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, has appealed to former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to reconsider any plan of contesting the 2027 presidential election, warning that doing so could jeopardise his hard-earned reputation as a global statesman and role model.

Delivering an address at the first session of the 13th synod of the Diocese of Abuja at the weekend, the primate made a passionate and direct plea to the former leader, urging him to preserve the legacy of integrity and civility he currently enjoys across the world.

“Goodluck Jonathan, I am happy that they took you to court. I am happy that the court said what they said,” Ndukuba said in an apparent reference to the legal victories that affirmed the former president’s political conduct.

He continued, “We don’t want you to spoil that good name. Please, keep off for now. Let them just play it. Please, please, please keep off for now. Let them just play it.”

The archbishop advised Jonathan to embrace the dignity of elder statesmanship, adding, “Be the senior citizen that you should be. We thank God for your life, not only for Nigeria but for the West Africa region, ECOWAS and Africa.”

Describing the former president as a symbol of integrity, Ndukuba added, “You are a symbol that should stand, and let nobody touch you.  You are a hope for our generation that it is possible for us to be civil, to lead with integrity, and possible for us to pass on a worthy legacy to those coming after us.”
