Deputy Speaker and member representing Ibaji State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Comfort Ojoma Nwuchiola Egwaba, has felicitated with President Bola Tinubu on his second year in office.
Hon. Comfort in a message read on the floor of the House on Thursday described the president’s two years in office as progressive and remarkable.
She described the president’s milestone as not just a celebration of time but a celebration of his unreserved will to chart a new and progressive course for Nigeria.
During an interactive session with journalists after the plenary, the deputy speaker described as baseless, insinuations that the 8th Assembly in the state was an appendage of the executive arm of government in the state.
She noted that no legislative arm should be described as rubber-stamp just because they were not on the war part with the executive.
Egwaba, who is the first female deputy speaker of the assembly, emphasised that one of the major duties of a legislator, aside law-making, was the ability to lobby infrastructure development to his or her constituency.
According to her, the executive and the legislative arms must work in harmony to be able to bring development to all parts of the state, without necessarily loosing their independence.
“What some people term legislative rubber stamp is the smooth working relationship with the executive arm of government. The legislature and the executive must not be at daggers drawn for them to be seen as working.
“What is important is what a legislator is able to attract to his or her community and not how much controversy he or she is able to generate. I’m an advocate of a smooth legislative/executive working relationship, without actually tampering with the independence of either,” she said.
