Kone Injury Casts Shadow As Canada Hammer 9-man Qatar To Move Top Of Group B

Canada recorded the first FIFA World Cup finals victory in their history with an emphatic 6-0 demolition of nine-man Qatar in Vancouver, but celebrations were tempered by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné that left head coach Jesse Marsch visibly emotional on the touchline.

The co-hosts produced a dominant display to put themselves on the brink of the knockout stages, yet the evening was overshadowed by a worrying second-half incident involving Koné.

With Canada already cruising at 3-0 and holding a numerical advantage, Koné and Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo challenged for a loose ball in a collision that resulted in a lengthy stoppage. Koné required extensive treatment before being stretchered from the pitch.

Madibo was initially shown a yellow card, but after a VAR review the punishment was upgraded to a red card. Amid chants of support from the home crowd, the former Watford midfielder was able to sit up and acknowledge supporters as he was carried around the perimeter of the pitch while receiving pain relief.

The injury could prove a significant setback for Canada’s World Cup ambitions, despite their commanding position in Group B.

Before the distressing incident, Canada had delivered a ruthless attacking performance. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a predatory finish, continuing his fine form by netting for the second consecutive match.

Thirteen minutes later, Jonathan David doubled the advantage and began a memorable evening of his own. Qatar’s task became even more difficult in the 33rd minute when Homam El Amin was sent off for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan.

David struck again deep into first-half stoppage time to give Canada a commanding 3-0 lead at the interval.

The second half was dominated by concern for Koné, though Canada maintained their momentum. Nathan Saliba curled home a superb free-kick in the 63rd minute to make it 4-0 and dedicated the goal to his injured team-mate by holding up Koné’s shirt, drawing a rousing response from the crowd.

Canada added a fifth with 15 minutes remaining when Qatar defender Mohammad Al Mannai inadvertently turned Buchanan’s effort into his own net.

David then completed a superb hat-trick in stoppage time, pouncing on Buchanan’s strike before firing beyond goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to cap a dominant display.

The six-goal victory lifts Canada to the top of Group B, level on points with Switzerland but boasting a superior goal difference. However, attention will now turn to the condition of Koné, whose injury threatens to cloud what should have been one of the greatest nights in Canadian football history.
