Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the South.

Kwankwaso declared his support on Saturday while addressing the party’s national convention in Abuja, describing the zoning arrangement as a step towards fairness, unity and national healing.

“It is therefore with great sense of unity and solidarity, that as a loyal party member, I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket of the NDC to the South, so that it allows the region to complete its turn in producing national leadership,” he said.

The former governor said the arrangement would ensure fairness and adherence to the principle of federal character.

“This represents a true opportunity for true national healing. We shall work in abidance with the party’s agreement to ensure fairness and federal character in all ramifications,” he added.

The NDC had earlier resolved at its convention to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while allocating the 2031 slot to the North as part of its rotational leadership arrangement.

Kwankwaso, however, expressed concern over the state of the nation, saying Nigeria was facing worsening insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges.

According to him, the country was unprepared for ongoing global geopolitical changes because of poor leadership.

“We are witnessing a sharp decline in the quality of life. Insecurity has created widows and orphans across the land. Millions have been displaced from their homes. Investments are fleeing, critical infrastructure is neglected, the education system is collapsing, and harsh economic policies have been imposed on citizens without meaningful safety nets or relief,” he stated.

The former governor also said the NDC would pursue leadership built on competence rather than ethnic or religious considerations.

“This party shall also ensure to change the way things are done today by prioritising leadership without ethnic jingoism and religious favouritism,” he said.

Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by registering with the Independent National Electoral Commission and joining the NDC.

He described the party as an emerging platform for national renewal, adding that it had continued to attract supporters and stakeholders across the country.
