The Kwara State government has distributed 2, 500 life jackets to riverine communities across five local government areas of the state.
The riverine communities spread across Moro, Kaiama, Bariten, Edu and Patigi local government areas of the state.
The state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq while performing the ceremony in Jebba, Moro local government area announced the resolve of the government to enforce the “no life jackets, no entry” rule for boat travels in the state.
AbdulRazaq noted the importance of life jackets to the safety of boat operators and passengers aboard waterways.
Represented by the commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. John Bello, the governor acknowledged the economic potentials of rivers in the state including fishing occupation, inter-city trading and commerce.
He charged the beneficiaries of the life jackets to key into the state’s renewed transportation agenda by making sure that the life jackets are judiciously used to prevent loss of lives on the waterways.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to continue to prioritise the safety of the people of the state, while remaining focused on building a sustainable environment for growth.
The commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Korasabi, described the event as a lifeline for the life of people of riverine communities whose life majorly depends on the river.
He added that , “the provision of the life jackets underscored the pledge and commitment of Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration’s to preventing the recurrence of boat capsize that had claimed scores of lives in Patigi recently, including a few other areas.”
He appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the donation of the life jackets to the state.
Earlier, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, Alh. Kabir Salau, has described the initiative as significant, a collective quest and shared commitment of the federal government, Kwara and concerned stakeholders in the state to find a lasting solution to tragic occurrences on the waterways.
