Organised labour in Ogun State yesterday vowed not to suspend the indefinite strike action embarked upon since Monday, despite assurances from the Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to commence full implementation of the Contributory Pension scheme in July this year.
Piqued by the stalemate that greeted their meeting with the governor, the labour unions insisted that the strike action continued in as much as the state government had failed to accede to their demands, bothering on an, “outright cancellation of the dysfunctional Contributory Pension Scheme”, or postponement of its commencement date to year 2042 as recommended by the Adekunle Hassan-led committee.
In a letter forwarded to the state governor, Abiodun, the organised labour stated that the thrust of their displeasure, which squarely centered on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) was not properly addressed by the governor and as such, the industrial dispute continued.
Rising from its emergency meeting yesterday, the organised labour said, “Council-in-session therefore resolved that its initial take of the congress as contained in its letter of Monday, 14th July, 2025 stands.”
In the letter, dated Friday the 18th July, 2023 and signed by state chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) and that of the13 other affiliates unions, the Ogun State workers noted that, “the thrust of our displeasure squarely centers on item (i), i.e. the Contributory Pension Scheme. The prayer of the entirety of the state and local government civil/public servants is the outright cancellation of the dysfunctional Contributory Pension Scheme, or its commencement date to 2042 as recommended by the Adekunle Hassan-led Committee”.
