Former Flying Eagles coach, Ladan Bosso, has urged Nigerians to acknowledge his significant contribution to the discovery and development of several burgeoning talents now shining with the Super Eagles.
Speaking passionately about the importance of youth development, Bosso highlighted the successful progression of three of his former players from the 2023 U-20 squad to the senior national team. He views their journey as a prime example of the true purpose of grassroots football.
“All three players were part of my U-20 team at the World Cup in 2023, and today they have stepped up to the senior team,” Bosso stated. “Two of them — Lawal and Nnadi — even made the squad for the AFCON, while Fredrick missed out due to injury.”
The coach expressed his pride and emphasised his influence on their ascent. “It would not be fair to talk about their progress without mentioning how I brought them from nowhere into the limelight. Before the World Cup, nobody really knew Lawal, Fredrick, or Nnadi. Their performances under my team gave them the platform to shine. That is what youth football is all about – not just winning trophies but discovering and developing talents. I can’t help but feel proud.“
Bosso’s comments underscore a crucial discussion within Nigerian football regarding the need to recognise coaches dedicated to talent development. While trophy victories often garner headlines, the fundamental success of youth football lies in producing players capable of representing the nation at the highest level. For Bosso, witnessing his former players don Nigeria’s colours at senior level serves as vindication of his mission.
