The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education has appealed for government assistance for Aminat Alege, a 12-year-old JSS 3 student of Adams Memorial High School who lost one of her eyes due to injury from teargas during a fracas between students of Agege Junior high School and Abibat Mogaji Secondary School.
This followed a recent assignment to the committee by the speaker to carry out an investigation into the incident.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Sangodara Mosunmola, said investigation carried out showed that in an attempt to evade arrest among the students, Aminat hid behind a car after leaving the mosque but got hit by a teargas canister shot by the police in an attempt to disperse the students.
She said as part of investigation into the incident, teachers of the school, parents of the victim and the commissioner for education and others were invited for discussion.
While commending the speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, for helping to meet Aminat’s hospital bills, Hon. Sangodara stated that though she had lost one of her eyes, the government should kindly grant her scholarship.
She added that schools should be mandated to embark on guidance and counseling as a subject in a bid to properly guide students.
In her contribution, Hon. Olumegbon Omolara said morals and ethics should be added to school syllabus to help nurture students.
