The Lagos State Safety Commission has intensified efforts to entrench a culture of safety, hygiene and professional responsibility in the spa and beauty industry, urging operators to make clients’ health and accident prevention central to their operations.
The Commission gave the charge on Wednesday at a one-day safety training programme organised for operators and practitioners in the beauty industry, with the theme, “Safe Hands, Safe Spaces: Building a Zero-Harm Culture in the Spa and Beauty Industry.”
Speaking at the event the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, said the programme was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of workplace safety requirements and equip them with the practical knowledge needed to identify hazards, manage risks and prevent avoidable incidents.
Mojola stressed that creating a safe business environment was a collective responsibility that required continuous education, personal commitment and strict compliance with established safety standards.
He noted that the Commission remained committed to strengthening safety consciousness across various sectors of the Lagos economy as part of efforts to safeguard residents, employees, business operators and visitors.
Mojola , represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Awolesi Ademola urged participants to move beyond the theoretical knowledge acquired at the training and incorporate appropriate safety measures into their daily operations, noting that the real value of the exercise would be reflected in improved workplace practices, better client protection and a reduction in preventable accidents.
According to him, safety should not be treated as an optional requirement or an afterthought in the beauty business but as an integral part of professional service delivery and sustainable
business growth.
The training featured technical presentations by industry experts who examined critical aspects of safety management and occupational health in the spa and beauty sector.
The Lagos State Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Mr Olusola Ogunleye, delivered the first lecture, titled “Beyond Beauty: Advanced Risk Assessment and Hazard Control in Spa Operations.” His presentation focused on the importance of identifying potential hazards and adopting effective control measures to minimise operational risks.
The second lecture, “Protecting the Hands That Heal: Occupational Health and Ergonomic Safety for Beauty Professionals,” was delivered by the Chief Medical Director of Skintetics Clinics, Dr Chuka Imo. The presentation examined occupational health considerations and the importance of ergonomic practices in protecting beauty professionals from work-related health risks.
The programme is expected to strengthen safety awareness among practitioners, promote responsible business practices and encourage the adoption of a preventive approach to risk management in Lagos State’s growing spa and beauty industry.
The Commission’s intervention underscores the importance of integrating safety into every stage of beauty and spa operations, from workplace management and staff welfare to client care and service delivery.
