The Cross River State Police Command says its timely intervention foiled a possible clash between participants at a presidential town hall meeting and supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Calabar on Wednesday.
The town hall meeting was organised by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, at the Metropolitan Hotel, Calabar, while the APC supporters were on a rally and road walk towards the Governor’s Office.
Tension rose when both groups converged in front of the Metropolitan Hotel as supporters awaited the arrival of the NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Police officers deployed to the area promptly moved in and engaged both groups to prevent the situation from escalating into violence.
The officers appealed to all parties to exercise restraint, maintain peace and ensure that their respective activities were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
The Command said the engagement was constructive and successful, adding that both groups later went about their activities without any breakdown of law and order.
