Lagos State government has stepped up efforts to tackle industrial hazards and eliminate workplace fatalities through the deployment of advanced safety strategies rooted in technology, behavioural change, and proactive risk management.

The director-general of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, disclosed this at a one-day Industrial Safety and Operational Risk Management training held on Thursday at the Ikeja Central Business District.

Represented by the commission’s director, Monitoring and Inspectorate, Mr Babatunde Asiyanbi, Mojola said the initiative underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening workplace safety amid rapid technological evolution across industries.

He explained that the training was designed to foster critical engagement among stakeholders on practical approaches to mitigating workplace risks, particularly within the manufacturing sector.

According to him, achieving safer workplaces requires deliberate efforts in employee engagement, behavioural observation, constructive feedback, and the reinforcement of positive safety practices.

Mojola emphasised the need to shift from a compliance-driven safety culture to one anchored in personal responsibility.

He noted that hazard reporting should be encouraged as a preventive, proactive measure rather than perceived as punitive.

He further highlighted the Commission’s resolve to embrace innovative safety solutions, including the deployment of digital tools and data-driven systems to enhance operational processes, machine safety, and accident prevention.

The director-general added that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of building a resilient and sustainable safety culture across Lagos State.

“Our goal is to ensure that every resident of Lagos can live and work in a safe and secure environment. We are leveraging technology and collaboration to advance our vision of a zero-accident state,” he said.

The training featured a series of expert-led sessions. Mr Babatunde Adedokun delivered a lecture on hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures. Another paper was presented by Mr Ojetokun Oluwole, focusing on personal protective equipment, machine guarding, and lockout-tagout procedures.

In the final session, Mrs Oluwatosin Sobola spoke about leadership commitment and the importance of delivering constructive feedback to promote a strong safety culture.
