Lagos Warns Motorists Of Traffic Disruption As Kara Bridge Repairs Begin

The Lagos State Government has advised motorists to expect partial traffic disruption around the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as repair works on the bridge’s expansion joint commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

The advisory was contained in a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, which said the rehabilitation would be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works and is expected to last for two weeks.

According to the ministry, the project will require the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge to provide a safe working area for engineers.

“To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone,” the statement read.

The ministry noted that the lane reduction could result in moderate traffic congestion around the Fatgbems Turn, as some motorists may make U-turns or divert to alternative routes to avoid delays.

However, it assured commuters travelling toward Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to flow with little or no disruption throughout the rehabilitation period.

The government urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, explore alternative routes where possible, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor to ensure smoother traffic movement.

The ministry appealed for public understanding, stating that the repair work is necessary to improve the safety and durability of the Kara Bridge for all road users.
