The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International Nigeria (TI‑Nigeria) have paid tribute to the  late  Daily Independent business editor,  Sylvester Enoghase, saying his work significantly raised standards for economic, business and labour reporting in Nigeria.

CISLAC executive director and TI‑Nigeria head Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani described Enoghase, who was also the labour editor at Daily Independent Newspapers, as a “thorough and principled journalist” whose coverage of business and labour issues promoted more informed public debate and strengthened democratic accountability.

Rafsanjani said Enoghase’s reporting combined meticulous fact‑checking with clear explanation of complex economic matters, a practice that helped professionalise business journalism and made technical subjects accessible to ordinary readers.

Rafsanjani noted that Enoghase’s election as chairman of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) reflected his standing among peers and his commitment to advancing reporting practices across the labour beat. Under his leadership, LAWAN members emphasised accuracy in wage and employment data, balanced sourcing in industrial disputes, and sustained coverage of workplace policy—moves Rafsanjani said contributed to improved public understanding of labour markets and industrial relations.

“Mr. Enoghase’s commitment to ethical journalism and public‑interest reporting left an enduring impact on the Nigerian media landscape,” Rafsanjani said. He added that Enoghase’s stories often bridged the gap between policy makers, employers and workers by highlighting the economic consequences of labour disputes, regulatory changes and corporate actions.

The statement highlighted Enoghase’s collaborative relationships with civil society organisations and stakeholders in governance and transparency, noting his readiness to pursue stories that held institutions accountable and clarified fiscal and regulatory issues affecting businesses and citizens. Rafsanjani said that approach strengthened the role of the press as a watchdog on economic governance and a source of reliable information for markets and policymakers.

Colleagues and labour-sector contacts frequently praised Enoghase for blending investigative instincts with a pragmatic focus on solutions, Rafsanjani added, citing the late editor’s reputation for integrity, humility and mentorship of younger reporters. His editorial oversight at Daily Independent, Rafsanjani said, raised newsroom expectations for sourcing, reportage balance and contextual analysis on economic stories.

“His death is a painful loss to the journalism profession and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him,” the CISLAC/TI‑Nigeria statement said. It extended condolences to Enoghase’s family, the management and staff of Daily Independent Newspapers, members of LAWAN, the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the wider media community, and prayed for strength for those grieving.

Rafsanjani concluded that maintaining the standards Enoghase modelled—accuracy, accountability and a focus on public interest—would be the best tribute to his professional legacy.
