Deputy Governor of the State and Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary HealthCare Task Force, Prof Kaletapwa George Farauta, has said effective leadership and governance are essential for healthcare delivery.
She stated this while commending the Enhanced Leadership, Governance and Management Capacities (ELGMC) building project of UNICEF, held in Yola, Adamawa State, last Thursday.
Farauta, who spoke at the Stakeholders Engagement Workshop for the project on Thursday, described ELGMC as particularly timely for improved healthcare delivery in the state, a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of DGI Consult, Dr Gafar Alawode, stated.
Quoting the Deputy Governor, the statement said, “strengthening leadership, governance and management systems in Primary Health Care is fundamental to improving planning, implementation, monitoring, and accountability within the health sector.
“These elements are essential if we are to achieve improved access and utilisation of high-impact Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N) services across our state”.
Faurauta, on behalf of the state government, expressed deep appreciation to UNICEF and Development Governance International (DGI) Consult for the commitment to strengthening the health system in Adamawa State, especially through ELGMC and SARAH Projects.
Their partnership and collaborations, according to her, “remain critical as we work collectively to build a stronger, more resilient and people-oriented Primary Health Care system that delivers quality services.”
Earlier, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Chief Bilishan Felix Tangwami, noted that the workshop is another wake-up call for proper health management.
He observed that, through the Leadership, Governance and Management Workshop, state health policy implementers will brace themselves to ensure efficiency in healthcare delivery, especially with the necessary support from the State Governor and the Deputy Governor.
The Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr Nuzhat Rafique, also noted that leadership in health management is key to efficient healthcare delivery while calling for very strong leadership at all levels, including at the LGA and facility levels.
She expressed appreciation to DGI Consult and other partners for coming at this time to implement the programme in the state.
In his remarks at the occasion, Dr Sylvester Akandewho, representing the Chief Executive Officer of DGI, Dr Gafar Alawode, commended the very strong political commitment of the Adamawa State government, especially as demonstrated by the Deputy Governor’s presence.
He noted that governance and management are crucial to health management, especially in terms of manpower resources and time, and that they rest squarely on leadership.
He disclosed that the workshop is just an entry meeting and that there will be other activities involving leaders at all levels.
Other important state officials at the occasion were the Executive Chairman, State Planning Commission, Dr Mary Paninga, the Executive Secretary, State Health Management Authority, Dr Amos Ujulu and the Executive Chairman, State Primary HealthCare Development Authority, Dr Sulieman Saidu Bashir.
