A coalition of youths under the banner of Northern Youth For Peace and Progress (NYPP) has raised concerns over the continued leadership of Senator Shehu Umar Buba as chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, following allegations linking him to a leaked video.
Addressing members of the press at a well-attended briefing in Kaduna yesterday, the group’s coordinator, Comrade Hassan Sadau, called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to act swiftly in what it described as “a matter of national urgency and public trust.”
The group expressed concern about the implications of recent allegations surrounding Senator Buba and its potential impact on the nation’s security architecture.
At the heart of the petition lies a purported leaked video reportedly linking the senator to activities allegedly benefiting bandit groups operating in the troubled North-West.According to the NYPP, the video features scenes where large sums of cash are being loaded into vehicles within Senator Buba’s premises, with numerous motorcycles—similar to those used by criminal elements in rural attacks parked nearby.
The video also allegedly shows the presence of a controversial cleric with known links to some bandit groups.
While the authenticity of the footage is yet to be officially verified, the youth group insists that such serious claims demand an immediate and impartial inquiry, particularly given the senator’s influential role in national security oversight.
The NYPP therefore called on the Senate leadership to relieve Senator Buba of his chairmanship position pending a thorough investigation while urging the Senate Ethics Committee to commence a full probe into the allegations to uphold the dignity of the legislative institution.
“Leaving Senator Buba in that position while these claims hang over him weakens the credibility of the committee and erodes public confidence in the Senate’s commitment to securing the nation,” Sadau said.
He added that the people of Zamfara State—one of the hardest-hit areas by banditry—continue to suffer daily trauma, displacement, and loss of life. According to him, the mere perception that any lawmaker may be complicit in these tragedies is enough to demand action.
