The music world is reacting to reports about veteran American music executive and record producer Clive Jay Davis.

According to reports, Davis died on Monday at his home in New York City at the age of 94. The BBC reported that he had recently been admitted to hospital with an upper respiratory infection before returning home on June 4.IMG 2520

An official cause of death has not been announced. However, his family described him as more than just a music industry icon in a statement released after his passing.

The family stated:

“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives. Today, we celebrate not only a towering figure whose influence changed music forever, but the man who led our family with grace, generosity, and kindness.”

Few music executives have shaped the industry like Clive Davis. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he became known for spotting talent before it reached the mainstream.

Davis played a key role in the careers of artists such as Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel and Kelly Clarkson.

As president of Columbia Records from 1967 to 1973, he led one of the label’s most successful eras. He later founded Arista Records in 1974, helping turn it into a major force in the music business.

Davis went on to launch J Records and hold senior roles at RCA Music Group and BMG North America. By 2018, he was still influencing the industry as chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment.
