US singer Chris Brown has received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abe Diaw at a London nightclub in 2023.
Brown, 37, appeared at Southwark Crown Court alongside co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, 40, after both men pleaded guilty to affray in July. Neither will serve immediate prison time under the sentences handed down.
Akinlolu received a four-month suspended sentence. Judge Tony Baumgartner said his involvement in the assault was significant but distinguished his role from Brown’s, noting that he had neither initiated the attack nor used a bottle.
During sentencing, the court reviewed CCTV footage showing Brown striking Diaw with a tequila bottle, including blows to the head. The judge described the repeated use of the bottle as plainly dangerous.
The court also heard how the defendants pursued Diaw after he attempted to move away. Judge Baumgartner said the assault took place in a crowded, confined space, increasing the danger posed by the violence.
Although the confrontation lasted no more than 20 seconds and was not planned, the judge said the violence was intense.
Diaw required hospital treatment following the incident for injuries to his head and knee.
Both defendants were ordered to contribute £1,500 each towards the prosecution’s costs. The judge stressed that the suspended sentences should still be regarded as punishment.
