Nasarawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the state government to ensure that the palliatives approved for the state by the federal government to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on the masses get to the intended beneficiaries.
The appeal formed parts of the council’s resolution at the end of its monthly congress held in Lafia, the state capital.
The congress which was presided over by the chairman of the council, Comrade Salihu Alkali, commended President Bola Tinubu for approving N5 million to mitigate the hardship occasioned by the subsidy removal.
It, however, urged the president to do more by providing an effective transportation system in collaboration with state governments in order to force down transport fares across the country.
It also urged the federal government to put in place measures that would crash the prices of food and essential items.
It particularly urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to ensure that the palliatives released by the federal government are not hijacked and diverted by officials saddled with the responsibility of distributing them.
The congress in a communique signed by the secretary, Mr Sunday John, also appealed to the governor to expedite action on the proposed renovation of the NUJ Press Centre as the structure has become a death trap.
“The congress appealed to Gov. Abdullahi Sule to redeem his pledge of a vehicle to the Nasarawa State Council of the NUJ as promised during one of his visits to the Press Centre in 2022.
“The congress appealed to Gov. Sule to always appoint professional journalists as commissioner for information for effective propagation of government’s policies and programmes.
The congress charged members to always exhibit high sense of professionalism in their reportage.
It also congratulated officials of the union on their re-election and urged them to consolidate on their achievements so far. Let Palliatives Get To Poor, Vulnerable People Nasarawa NUJ Tells Govt
