The Onitsha North Local Government in Anambra State has taken its “Rewarding Excellence” programme to Santa Maria School, Onitsha, with a call on students to embrace discipline, hard work and civic responsibility as the foundation for building lasting legacies.

The chairman of the local government, Hon Tony Nweze Nwora, who was represented by the supervisor for Education and Social Development, Hon Chinedu Romanus Eze, addressed students, teachers and management in a message titled “Legacy: Our Collective Responsibility,” during the event held at the weekend.

He stressed that academic success must be built on integrity, not shortcuts.

“I urge you to avoid exam malpractice, disobedience to teachers, parents and guardians, and disregard for constituted authority in our society. Your character today will determine the legacy you leave tomorrow. Excellence is not just about grades, it is about values,” he said.

The supervisor also cautioned students against drug use, warning specifically against smoking.

He commended the teachers and school management for their dedication to molding young minds.

As part of the programme, the council donated a variety of educational materials to the school. Students who distinguished themselves academically also received “Rewarding Excellence” gifts, including clothes, presented to encourage continued diligence.

The “Rewarding Excellence” initiative, introduced under the current Onitsha North administration, is aimed at recognising outstanding performance in schools across the LGA and promoting moral values alongside academic achievement.

School authorities commended the local government for the gesture and pledged to sustain the culture of discipline and excellence among students.
