Liverpool Heap More Misery On Tottenham As Dowman Stars In First Arsenal Rout

Liverpool compounded Tottenham’s miserable start to the season with a 3-1 victory in the League Cup third round at Anfield on Tuesday, while 16-year-old Max Dowman stole the spotlight as Arsenal thrashed Ipswich 4-2.

Tottenham’s hopes of a morale-boosting cup run ended in disappointing fashion as Liverpool dominated the rain-soaked contest to secure a place in the next round.

Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were on target for Liverpool, while Conor Gallagher scored Tottenham’s consolation.

The defeat piles further pressure on Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, whose side are without a Premier League win or goal after four matches. Their only victory this season came in the League Cup against Championship side Charlton.

Tottenham finished 17th in each of the last two Premier League campaigns and invested more than £300 million on 10 new signings during the summer, but the results have yet to match the scale of their spending.

De Zerbi’s problems were compounded by striker Richarlison, who criticised his omission from the squad on social media. The Brazilian is reportedly seeking a move away from the club after proposed switches to Everton and Vasco da Gama fell through.

Tottenham host Aston Villa on Saturday in a fixture that could prove significant for De Zerbi before the international break.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made 10 changes to his starting XI but his reshuffled side still took control.

Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 21st minute after Rio Ngumoha teed him up following a flowing move involving Gakpo.

Gakpo doubled the lead nine minutes after half-time with a superb strike into the far corner.

Gallagher pulled one back for Tottenham in the 69th minute, scoring from a corner after Liverpool failed to deal with the marking.

Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage in stoppage time with a spectacular 25-yard strike.

DOWMAN SHINES FOR ARSENAL

At Portman Road, teenage sensation Dowman made a major impression as Arsenal defeated Ipswich 4-2.

Mikel Arteta made nine changes from the team that beat Sunderland on Saturday, handing the 16-year-old his first appearance of the season.

Dowman, who made his breakthrough as a 15-year-old last season, opened the scoring after only seven minutes, beating Cedric Kipre with quick footwork before calmly finishing.

Noni Madueke doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 16th minute before Dowman struck again two minutes into the second half, converting Martin Zubimendi’s pass.

Dowman then turned provider for Mikel Merino, who curled home Arsenal’s fourth in the 58th minute.

Anis Mehmeti and Chuba Akpom scored for Ipswich, but their efforts could not prevent Arsenal from maintaining their perfect start in all competitions.

Elsewhere, Fulham edged Championship leaders West Ham 3-2, while Brentford defeated third-tier Reading 2-1.

Manchester United host Brighton and Aston Villa travel to Coventry on Wednesday, while Everton face Wolves.
