Liverpool icon Dean Saunders has issued a strong warning to Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, advising him to reject potential summer moves to Chelsea or Manchester United.
Reports suggest both Premier League heavyweights are preparing to make significant moves for the 23-year-old following the conclusion of the World Cup, as the England international continues to impress during the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
However, in an interview with PariuriX, Saunders urged the young playmaker to stay put at Villa Park for at least another season, arguing that a transfer to either club would be a step backward.
“Honestly, I don’t think Rogers should go anywhere,” Saunders stated. He elaborated on the upcoming discussions he expects between the player and manager Unai Emery.
“I can imagine the conversations when Unai Emery calls him in. Rogers will be asking who Villa are planning on signing. He will say, ‘if you want me to stay, who are we coming in with? Are we shopping in Lidl or an expensive store?’”
Saunders was adamant that Aston Villa currently represent a better project than the two traditional powers courting his client.
“United and Chelsea are being mentioned with Rogers, but Aston Villa are better than both of them. I wouldn’t recommend him joining them.”
He specifically highlighted the perilous situation at Manchester United, painting a grim picture of the club’s current environment.
“We have seen what is happening when you move to Man United. It is like a graveyard.”
While acknowledging the club’s recent efforts to cleanse the squad, Saunders remained unconvinced of a true turnaround.
“It looks like they are going in the right direction, and they have gotten rid of a lot of the players with a bad attitude, but they had to hit rock bottom before doing so. Now, they can sign players who want to play when it is cold.”
